Abstract

This study evaluated the effects of several environmental parameters on seedling survival in Cypress of the Cordillera (Austrocedrus chilensis) both in the greenhouse and in the forest. In the greenhouse studies, seedling survival was evaluated under different irrigation and light regimes In the forest, association of seedlings with vegetation cover was analyzed. Although adult cypress trees are regarded as intolerant to shade, regeneration appeared to require conditions other of light. The intolerance of cypress to shade varied with growth phase, becoming more emphasized in the adult phase. It is concluded that in the greenhouse and in the forest, cypress regeneration takes place mainly under conditions that are protected from desiccation.
